A contribution does not need to be long, complete or written in polished language. It may begin with a name, a photograph, a remembered sentence, a place, a date or one brief memory.
The project can help organise, explain and develop the material. Authority over the contribution remains with the person and whānau who provided it.
Living history begins when someone says: “I still remember.”

A Memory or Personal Account
Stories of whānau, childhood, work, the marae, the sea, gatherings and everyday life on Rangiwaea.
Faces and Places
Photographs of people, homes, farms, boats, gatherings, buildings and community events.
Oral History
Audio, video, waiata, karakia or an interview preserving the voices of whānau.
Names and Life Histories
Information about an ancestor, kaumātua, whānau member, leader, worker or memorable community figure.
Place Names and Locations
An old name, home, farm, pathway, landing place, fishing ground or significant location.
Historical Events
A date, year, gathering, opening, change or event that should be added to the historical timeline.
Written and Printed Material
Letters, notices, maps, meeting records, publications, programmes, labels or other documents.
Additional Knowledge
A missing name, more accurate date, new explanation, whānau connection or correction to existing material.
Suggest a Speaker
Nominate a kaumātua, whānau member or another person whose stories and memories should be recorded.
You Do Not Need to Be a Writer
A contribution may be typed directly, attached to a photograph, uploaded as a file, spoken over the phone or developed through an online or in-person interview.
When you are uncertain where to begin, simply provide the details you currently know. The story can be carefully developed later.
Authority and Permission
Submitting a story, photograph, recording or document does not mean it will automatically be published online.
The material, its context, ownership, the contributor’s wishes and any necessary permissions will be reviewed before use.
You may choose to be personally credited, have your whānau acknowledged or contribute without public attribution.
Access and Privacy Options
Not every taonga is suitable for unrestricted public access. You may identify the level of protection appropriate for your contribution or whānau.
Original Taonga
When you hold an original photograph, letter, album, tape or document, please do not send the original by post without making prior arrangements.
Begin by providing a digital photograph or copy with an explanation. When high-quality scanning of an original is appropriate, a safe process can be arranged.
What Happens After Submission?
A contribution may connect with other photographs, people, places or events already held within the collection. In this way, one memory can grow into a richer part of the wider community history.
A History Built Together
The history of Rangiwaea does not belong to one person alone. Its many parts are carried across numerous whānau, and memories or perspectives may sometimes differ.
Those differences are welcomed. By bringing many voices together, a deeper and more honest picture of life on Rangiwaea can emerge.
